Agriculture: The Chile-EU Agreement

the association agreement between chile and the european union

The association agreement between Chile and the European Union is one of the most important bilateral agreements signed by Chile, and the first agreement signed by the European Union with a single country.

This bilateral agreement is the longest and wider agreement ever signed by Chile. It constitutes a milestone for the international economic relations of the country, and it has proven to be an essential tool to strengthen the ties with the European Union.

Besides his commercial significance, the agreement also implies a great amount of cooperation and political dialogue and it has become a model for later agreements between the European Union and Latin American countries.

Being the European Union a relatively close economy, the launch of the agreement had a strong impact in Chilean exportations. But the EU became not only the most important market  for national exportations, but also the main source of foreign investment and the chief destiny of Chilean products.

Since the launch of the agreement (February the 1rst, 2003), the agricultural exports have triplicated, and thus the European Union has become the first commercial partner of Chile in agricultural, forestry and livestock farming matters.
